Julie has taught yoga for twenty years, training in multiple lineages both in US and India. She integrates Authentic Movement, yoga, BMC and other approaches into her counseling work.
Her belief in body/mind practices has inspired her to bridge her love for yoga with the depth work of psychotherapy.
Julie is a licensed Marriage, Family Therapist, (MFT LIc. #36095) Yoga Therapist, Yoga Teacher in private practice in Berkeley, CA. She holds degrees from Wesleyan University and The California Institute of Integral Studies where she graduated from the Psychology/Drama Therapy Master’s Program.
Julie is also a writer and the author of “365 Yoga: Daily Meditations,” a Tarcher/Penguin book. The book has been converted into a daily calendar of quotes published yearly by Sellars Publishers.
Yoga Background
Julie began teaching yoga in New York City at both the Jivamukti Yoga Center, and Sivananda Center in 1990 as a complement to her work in the theater as a stage actor. Her early influences were her teachers in New York City: Peentz Dubble (Iyengar), Sharon Gannon, David Life (Jivamukti) and Dharma Mittra. In California she continued her studies with Amy Cooper, Rodney Yee, Mark Whitwell, Patricia Sullivan, Ramanand Patel, Angela Farmer and Victor Van Kooten, and more recently with the School for Body Mind Centering and Bonnie Bainbridge Cohen.
In multiple trips to India, Julie has been priviliged to study Ashtanga yoga with its founder, K. Pattabhi Jois in Mysore with a small group of dedicated students. She spent time in private study at the Krishnamacharya Yoga Mandiram in Chennai (Desikachar’s center) where she delved into a study of vinyasa yoga, yoga therapy, chanting and yoga psychology. She studies North Indian classical vocal music and chant with her music guru Sri Karunamayee of the Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Delhi.
Julie is on the staff of the Northern California Functional Restoration Program in Emeryville where she serves as the Yoga and Movement Therapist for patients who have chronic pain. She has presented workshops on Yoga for Anxiety and Depression at The Yoga and Healing Conference presented annually in Marin County. Julie has taught at numerous Bay Area Yoga studios beginning in the 1990′s in San Francisco’s Mission District.
Julie currently holds private classes in Berkeley, and is on the yoga staff at Ironworks Climbing Gym, and 7th Heaven yoga center.
